I’m not even sure where to start with this review。 The book was ok, the story had some good aspects but it just didn’t grip me。 I nearly gave up several time and then at about 60% through, it finally got interesting。 The characters were not entirely likeable, which is not really an issue, but there didn’t seem to be any redeeming features in any of them until the end。 The ending for me was unrealistic and very far fetched so I have to surmise that it just wasn’t a book for me although I’m sure o I’m not even sure where to start with this review。 The book was ok, the story had some good aspects but it just didn’t grip me。 I nearly gave up several time and then at about 60% through, it finally got interesting。 The characters were not entirely likeable, which is not really an issue, but there didn’t seem to be any redeeming features in any of them until the end。 The ending for me was unrealistic and very far fetched so I have to surmise that it just wasn’t a book for me although I’m sure others will enjoy it。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed Lisa Gardner's Before She Disappeared when I read it last year and said at the end of my review that I hoped it wouldn't be the last we see of Frankie Elkin。 One Step Too Far isn't just her welcome return, it's also confirmation that she is one of the most engaging new characters in crime fiction。It struck me that Frankie could perhaps be described as the messed-up, human equivalent of the Littlest Hobo as she travels from town to town helping those in need。 Admittedly she s I thoroughly enjoyed Lisa Gardner's Before She Disappeared when I read it last year and said at the end of my review that I hoped it wouldn't be the last we see of Frankie Elkin。 One Step Too Far isn't just her welcome return, it's also confirmation that she is one of the most engaging new characters in crime fiction。It struck me that Frankie could perhaps be described as the messed-up, human equivalent of the Littlest Hobo as she travels from town to town helping those in need。 Admittedly she sees a happy ending less often, acknowledging that when she looks for a missing person, she is most often looking for their body。 Nevertheless, she keeps moving on, offering her assistance to those who need to know what happened to their loved one, even if that results in them having their worst fears finally realised - because even that is better than never knowing。 It means this series immediately has an advantage over many others, as the constantly changing locations will ensure it never feels stale。In the previous book, Frankie was in Boston, this time she's in rural Wyoming; the contrast between the two places couldn't be more striking and yet she may be in even more danger here than in the city。 She makes a snap decision to head to the small town of Ramsey when she reads about the disappearance of Timothy O'Day in a small local paper。 Tim went missing on his stag weekend and the book actually opens with the immediate aftermath as his three of his friends stumble into town in a state of panic, babbling about mountain lions and bears。 However, despite an extensive search at the time, Tim was never found and now five years have passed and his father, Martin is still searching, now on a last-ditch effort to find his son and to bring him home。It's probable from the start that this isn't going to be an uplifting story about a heroic rescue against all the odds。 When Frankie offers to join the search party, she is hardly welcomed with open arms and it's perhaps her determination to join complete strangers who haven't asked for her help which makes her such a fascinating protagonist。 She is good at what she does but she doesn't have any obvious skills besides a keen sense of intuition and a stubborn nature which ensures she doesn't ever want to give up。 She carries the weight of her own past with her and at times it threatens to overwhelm her but it also explains why she has chosen this life。 It's not necessary to have read Before She Disappeared but there are a few references here to people she met in that book and between that story and this one, the little glimpses we are given into her past help us to build a clearer picture of what shaped this wise-cracking, complicated, resolute woman。It's a begrudging Martin who eventually agrees to her joining the team and it's from here that the authenticity of the writing really shines through。 From the preparations undertaken by the small group of people headed into the wilderness, to the descriptions of their gruelling hike, to the discussions about the work of cadaver dogs, it's clear that this is a book informed by the meticulous research that went into writing it。 This attention to detail also establishes a rich sense of place which casts the reader into the terrifyingly demanding terrain。Frankie joins Martin; Nemeth, an uncompromising local guide who seems almost hewn from the landscape he leads them into; a dog handler with her search-and-rescue dog; Tim's groomsmen friends; and Bob, a larger-than-life Bigfoot expert。 They are a disparate bunch and not all immediately easy to warm to but Lisa Gardner is superb at creating these complex, flawed characters who by turn frustrated, surprised and endeared me to them。 As Frankie quickly realises she is one of the weakest links but then suspects she may have more to worry about than whether she can keep up with the group, One Step Too Far becomes both a nerve-shredding, terror-drenched thriller and an intense, raw tale of loss, grief and friendship。The tension escalates unrelentingly and I tore through the pages in just a few hours but although this is undeniably a compulsively chilling, tautly plotted nightmare, it's also a more measured exploration of the separate yet tragically intertwined stories of these characters。 What drives each of them to pit themselves against the elements, each other and whatever other dangers are waiting for them is equally as compelling as their desperate bid to survive the unimaginable horrors that confront them。I absolutely loved One Step Too Far, it's an exhilarating rollercoaster of a thriller and a memorable, compassionate study of broken people。 To borrow from the lyrics of The Littlest Hobo theme song, maybe tomorrow Frankie Elkin will want to settle down but until tomorrow she'll just keep moving on - and I can't wait to join her again for a while。 Very highly recommended。 。。。more

This book is phenomenal。 I know you are probably thinking I am biased because I usually love Lisa Gardner’s books, but she has definitely done it again。 If possible, she went up a notch。 Or maybe it’s like a belt where you have to puncture a new hole on your own because there were no more notches left? It’s that good。One Step Too Far follows Frankie Elkin on another trip as she looks for a missing man that disappeared in a national forest。 I have to say, this is far off what Lisa Gardner typically writes about when it comes to setting。 Only once before that I can remember did we end up in the wild on a hunt。 Of course, this is the second time we are seeing Frankie Elkin, and her cases of missing people are bound to take her to some weird places。With that said, I have to tell you how much I love Frankie Elkin。 While she is closed off and tries to not build ties to any one place, she is very relatable to a lot of people and I feel like we got to see that side of her in this story。 I also came to love a lot of the characters as well。 Nemeth was that interesting, dad-type。 He was in charge, but he would pay respect where respect was do。 Bob was probably one of my favorites along side the human/dog duo。 Who doesn’t like an adorable dog? All the characters had so many layers and Gardner did a fantastic job of letting us peel those back piece by piece。 This slow build of characters and their backgrounds really added to the story。 I was suspect of everyone from the beginning。 Slowly I started weeding people out as I got to know them。 But… I NEVER SAW THE ENDING COMING。 Complete shocker。This story is a jaw clenching, cover your face, one eye open type of suspense。 So many times I was devouring the pages, but also trying to look away because I was scared of what was going to happen。 Think jump scare but in book form。 How does someone even do that? Well, the thriller writer Queen, Lisa Gardner, figured it out。 I was on the edge of my seat。 Constant suspense, even in the “quiet” moments of the story。 I was constantly questioning and trying to figure out who was doing what。 I could not put this book down。 I’m usually good at figuring things out along the way, but I was even convinced everyone would die in the end because I had no idea how people were going to survive this。 I contemplated ghostly involvement at one point。 Gardner had me stumped。So basically if you are a living, breathing human, you should read this book。 It doesn’t matter if you don’t typically like suspense or thrillers。 This book is SO good。 I’m a big fan of Detective D。D。 Warren from Gardner’s books, but Frankie Elkin has won my heart! I cannot wait for more Frankie。 Here’s to hoping Lisa Gardner starts writing a few books a year to appease my thriller appetite! One Step Too Far is going on my favorites list。 Possibly my favorite Gardner book of all time… so far。 。。。more

Timothy O’Day was thirty-three years old when he went missing。 The first member of his family to go to college, he graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering。 Described by his friends as a regular MacGyver, the woods were Tim’s happy place。 Tim knew his shit, and was the reason they were camping for his bachelor party weekend – so into the mountains they’d gone。 They hiked for seven miles looking for the perfect camping spot in one of the deep canyons, near a Timothy O’Day was thirty-three years old when he went missing。 The first member of his family to go to college, he graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering。 Described by his friends as a regular MacGyver, the woods were Tim’s happy place。 Tim knew his shit, and was the reason they were camping for his bachelor party weekend – so into the mountains they’d gone。 They hiked for seven miles looking for the perfect camping spot in one of the deep canyons, near a broad river – the five of them each carrying a six-pack of beer and some bottles of Maker’s Marks with the distinctive red wax seal …Crashing trees and a wail had the college friends bursting from their tents in the dead of night, bleary eyed, trying to pinpoint the source of the disturbance。 “Build up the fire” One demanded! “Make noise of their own。” “Double check the food stash they’d strung up in the trees away from their campsite。” … which is why it took them a few minutes before they realised their party of five had become four!Volunteers showed up, the national guard arrived to assist … twenty-three long, exhausting days passed and the temperatures dropped and snow blanketed the upper elevations … and only family members and friends remained! Martin O’Day continued the longest, with a lifetime of experience and the advantage of being the one who had trained his son。 Martin O’Day searched for his son。 Then he searched for signs of his son。 And then, he searched for his son’s body。 The college friends, Neil, Josh, Miggy and Scott did their best to assist while juggling jobs, family and daily life。 Wracked with guilt, they had little choice, but going back to those woods was the last thing any of them wanted to continue to do。 “Grizzly bear,” Neil whispered。 “Mountain lion,” Josh Argued。 “Goddammit,” Miggy said。As for the real answer, the woods never said。 As seasons turned into years and Timothy O’Day became one more missing hiker – vanished without a trace, here are things most people don’t know: At least sixteen hundred people, if not many more remain missing on the national public lands。 Hikers, Day trippers, Children on camping trips。 One moment they were with us, the next they’re gone。 There is little in the way of designated funding – a large scale search effort can cost upwards of three hundred thousand dollars a day。 For many County Sheriffs, that’s their annual budget。 Meaning, when volunteers go away, so do rescue efforts。 Leaving behind a family with little hope and no closure。 Most will continue on their own for as long as they are able。 Some, such as Martin O’Day, continue to hunt every year, assisted by friends, funded by online campaigns and advised by various experts。 Martin has been at it for five years now – this August will be his final attempt on the anniversary of his son’s disappearance! His wife, Patrice is dying of cancer, and it’s her dying wish to see her son again and for them to be buried together! As Frankie Elkin reads the article again, and then again, something about the story has gotten under her skin。 Finding missing people is what she does。 When the police have given up and the public no longer remember, she starts looking。 For no money, no recognition, and most of the time, no help! She has no professional training, she is not a former detective or registered PI or ex-anything special … She is an average, middle-aged white woman – short on belongings – long on regrets。 One day, a woman in AA talked about her daughter who had disappeared and the police’s lack of interest in finding a young woman with a troubled past。 This is where it all began。 She has had sixteen missing persons cases – and found only one living soul。 Why do I do what I do? Because at the end of the day, the people left behind matter as much as the ones who are missing。 We mourn the ones we’ve lost, but we agonise over the pieces of ourselves they took with them。“Can you shoot a gun?”“God no。 I rely on my charm。”“And when a bear charges?”“Um, run faster than the next person?”Frankie Elkin & Nemeth (former National Park Ranger)“If Nemeth and Martin were picking hiking teams on a mountain playground, we’d definitely be the last kids they tapped。”Frankie ElkinI read Before She Disappeared, #1 in the Frankie Elkin series, in preparation for this book which I got a free copy of sent straight to my Kindle for an honest review … and I’m so happy I came across this series when I did – I’ll definitely be keeping up with it and longing for the next book to come out。 I absolutely love Lisa Gardner’s writing style and subsequently her main character, Frankie。 She is smart, funny, refreshingly honest and heartwarming。 As a rule, thrillers don’t tend to be all that funny, but … I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard reading a book – well – since I read her last one!I loved the atmosphere of the dense woods and mountains, the tension built throughout the book to the point of suspense having you on the edge of your seat。 The constant danger, feeling of being watched and not knowing who or what was coming for them was palpable, but Lisa Gardner somehow managed to write in some comedy gold along the way, plus a fair share of beautiful honest human moments and heartbreak。 With a cast of nine main characters (including Daisy of course) this could have easily gotten confusing fast but the way they were all written and introduced in groups。 It just worked really well and you got time with and got to know each of the characters。 I have loved both of the books so far in the Frankie Elkin series。 The two books are very different to each other but equally as good。Highly recommend – the book is due to be released on 20th January 2022。 My thanks to the author and Random House Uk for the gifted copy to review via NetGalley。 。。。more

I did not think it was possible to love a series more than the D。 D。 Warren series, but Lisa Gardner has truly proven me wrong。 From the first book, I was absolutely hooked on the main character, Frankie。 The two books in this series could not possibly be more different。 Book one takes place in an urban setting and book two takes place in the wilderness。 Book one has cop vibes and book two has survival of the fittest vibes。But the setting and vibes truly show that Frankie is capable of ANYTHING。 I did not think it was possible to love a series more than the D。 D。 Warren series, but Lisa Gardner has truly proven me wrong。 From the first book, I was absolutely hooked on the main character, Frankie。 The two books in this series could not possibly be more different。 Book one takes place in an urban setting and book two takes place in the wilderness。 Book one has cop vibes and book two has survival of the fittest vibes。But the setting and vibes truly show that Frankie is capable of ANYTHING。 Her addictive nature fuels her desire to find missing people and she doesn’t stop until she finds them - no matter what。 Frankie’s personality is what makes this series so great, but the stories behind the missing people are also excellent。 The characters are all developed very well and the experience of this hiking trip will play out like a movie in your mind。 I HIGHLY recommend this series!! 。。。more

One Step Too Far by Lisa Gardner is the 2nd book in her Frankie Elkin series。 I have read a few series by Gardner, and I think she is one of the best authors who write suspense thrillers, as I have loved all her books。 Frankie Elkin, our heroine, is the star of this series; she is a recovering alcoholic, who devotes all of her time to find missing people that are cold cases。 Over the years she has found 15 people, with the majority not found alive。 When she reads about a woman who is dying, and One Step Too Far by Lisa Gardner is the 2nd book in her Frankie Elkin series。 I have read a few series by Gardner, and I think she is one of the best authors who write suspense thrillers, as I have loved all her books。 Frankie Elkin, our heroine, is the star of this series; she is a recovering alcoholic, who devotes all of her time to find missing people that are cold cases。 Over the years she has found 15 people, with the majority not found alive。 When she reads about a woman who is dying, and wants to be buried next to her presumed dead son, Tim, who disappeared 5 years ago; she learns that a group is planning to do another search, and Frankie decides to join them。 The experienced group consists of the missing boy’s father, the four boys who went camping together 5 years ago, a woman and her cadaver dog, the local wilderness expert, and a bigfoot expert。 When Frankie approaches them, at first, they do not want her, even if one tells them she does find missing people; but one of the boys gets sick, they allow Frankie to become part of the search。The difficult trek into the woods has them all exhausted, but Martin, the father, pushes them to keep going。 In a short time, things change, as overnight they are being sabotaged (food stolen, camp in disarray, etc。); and they realized that someone is out to stop them from continuing the journey。 The story was set in the Shoshone National Forest, which became creepy each passing day, especially after they learn many more people were missing over the years。 I loved Daisy, who was the perfect search and rescue dog, and her handler, Luciana; with Frankie becoming closer to them。 Frankie is a great heroine, as she is tough, street savvy, smart and tenacious。 She makes sure to talk and question all the other members of the group, to get her feel of what really happened, as well as being concerned by who is now hunting them。 The last half of the book was a tense, scary, exciting thriller that kept me glued to my kindle, especially with everyone fighting for survival, and the danger escalates as slowly one by one they fall。 Who will survive? Who is the villain? What follows is an amazing, action-packed, exciting & intense thriller, where Frankie finds herself in some dangerous situations, as she desperately tries to survive in the wilderness。 As we get closer to the end, there are a number of surprises and twists, which had me on the edge of my seat。 Once again, Lisa Gardner gives us a fabulous intense exciting story, that was very well written。 As noted previously, you can never go wrong reading Lisa Gardner, who always writes fantastic suspense psychological thrillers。 I suggest you read One Step Too Far, which was a fantastic story。BarbThe Reading Cafe 。。。more

4。5 StarsIn the spur of the moment Frankie Elkin decides to get off the bus she is traveling on in Wyoming to get to the town where a man having a bachelor camping party disappeared without a trace 5 years earlier。 She will wonder more than once if she did the right thing joining the annual search party led by his father。 I quickly devoured this book; it is a page turning thriller。

I was already itching to share the book love only 10 minutes after I finished reading it, so I’m excited it’s finally review day。This is the second novel in a series about Frankie Elkin, a woman – not a detective, not a professional – who tries to find missing persons。 A new location and new characters in every novel in the series, it’s a wonderful idea because you can read them as standalones but the characters of the first book in the series (bar owner Stoney, his terrorizing cat (still love him) and the special detective) were so great that I wished she’d stayed in town。 That was before I read this novel。 By the end of it, I had exactly the same feelings all over again, so many of the characters captured my heart, not to mention the dog, a lab called Daisy who’s a cadaver dog but can also find people alive。Frankie is on her way to investigate the disappearance of an 8 year old but decides to make a little detour and join a search party for Timothy O’Day who went missing 5 years earlier。 The party consists of 8 people (and a dog): a grieving father, a hiking guide, three college friends and three semi-professional searchers。 They set out to an area in the massive Popo Agie Wilderness Area that consists of woods, mountains, streams, lakes, gullies, cliff faces, wild animals, you name it。 Frankie is the one most out of her comfort zone but this city girl is determined, focused and absolutely amazing at what she does。 When night falls on day 1 someone sabotages the group but who? I was hyperalert all through the novel but I honestly couldn’t say and after a while they all wormed their way into my heart。I’d love to go over everything they went through up on that mountain but that would mean we’d need another hour。 Suffice to say that there is lots of blood and wounds involved and yeah people will also get murdered。 It’s like a version of The Hunger Games but better, so much better。 The plot was so clever。 I also had not a single idea how this was going to end。I really enjoyed the first novel Before She Disappeared but in all honesty One Step Too Far is even better。 If this doesn’t make it on my top 10 end of year list I don’t know what does! This character driven novel has wrung me out emotionally too。 I nearly cried once, then smiled when it all came to a close, and in the very last pages I was emotional all over again。 I think it’s easier to say it’s hormones then to explain to non-readers。It can’t get any better than this if you ask me, but I can’t wait to follow Frankie again in the next novel and see what trouble finds her there! 。。。more

I loooved Before She Disappeared, Lisa Gardner’s first novel led by Frankie Elkin, the amateur searcher for missing people。 That one was set in Boston, in an underserved Haitian community。 The author created a whole raft of great characters and I was looking forward to spending more time with them, but, in an audacious move (and maybe a little bit like Jack Reacher), Frankie has not only left Boston, her newest case is in the wilderness of Wyoming。 But rest assured, there’s a whole new raft of i I loooved Before She Disappeared, Lisa Gardner’s first novel led by Frankie Elkin, the amateur searcher for missing people。 That one was set in Boston, in an underserved Haitian community。 The author created a whole raft of great characters and I was looking forward to spending more time with them, but, in an audacious move (and maybe a little bit like Jack Reacher), Frankie has not only left Boston, her newest case is in the wilderness of Wyoming。 But rest assured, there’s a whole new raft of intriguing and well-developed characters and a thrilling and tense mystery for Frankie to solve。Five years ago, Tim O’Day disappeared into the Popo Agi Wilderness after his bachelor party camping trip broke up in disarray。 There have been multiple searches since, but now as Tim’s mother lies dying of cancer, there is one last push。 A search party is set up, a mix of outdoor professionals, the remains of the bachelor party, and by a twist, Frankie whose only experience of camping is an aborted backyard one with her alcoholic father。Once out in big nature, it gradually becomes apparent that a) pretty much everybody is hiding something and b) somebody is unhappy about the search party’s presence。 The tension ratchets way up when the party arrives in Devil’s Canyon and it becomes violently clear that somebody does not want them there。I was gripped the whole way through but I did feel a little let down by the tidiness of the resolution, which the more I thought about it didn’t quite add up。 There’s been a few 3am “but why did x person do that?” and “why didn’t x person do that?” sessions while I threshed through the plot。 Nonetheless I hugely enjoyed my time with Frankie and co and look forward to her next adventure。Thanks to Dutton and Netgalley for the digital review copy。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up Thanks for the ARC Netgalley! This atmospheric thriller was quite the page turner。 NetGalley didn’t mention this was the second in the Frankie Ellis series when I requested it。 It can be read as a stand alone as I did, but I look forward to reading the first book for some background on Frankie and some depth to a few things mentioned throughout the book。 Frankie is a drifter who is obsessed with solving cold cases and bringing closure to the loved ones of the missing。 Tim went mis 3。5 rounded up Thanks for the ARC Netgalley! Frankie Elkin is unique, damaged, and so very memorable。 I loved her and was sad when I turned the last page on her story when I read "Before She Disappeared"。 I feel the same way now。。。 Frankie is so endearing in her own stubborn, slightly reserved way。 She is fast becoming my all-time favorite fictional character。She is out of her usual urban element and it tests her in ways both physical and emotional。 Driven by some unknown compulsion to bring back the body of a young man to his mother, she Frankie Elkin is unique, damaged, and so very memorable。 I loved her and was sad when I turned the last page on her story when I read "Before She Disappeared"。 I feel the same way now。。。 Frankie is so endearing in her own stubborn, slightly reserved way。 She is fast becoming my all-time favorite fictional character。She is out of her usual urban element and it tests her in ways both physical and emotional。 Driven by some unknown compulsion to bring back the body of a young man to his mother, she risks life and limb in her efforts。I adored the writing in this book。 The dreadful and disturbing circumstances which were lightened with levity and sarcasm。 Many themes run through this page-turning narrative, the most predominant ones being guilt, remorse, loss, and human connection。This is a character-driven thriller and an epic adventure of wilderness survival wrapped up into one。Gosh。。。 do I have to wait until next January to read more Frankie Elkin? I enjoyed this second novel about Frankie, self-appointed finder of lost people。 I liked the setting of the Wyoming wilderness, the mystery of what happened to Tim (which I did not figure out at all), and while Frankie's alcoholism took less of center stage in this one, we learn more about her childhood and the roots of her drinking。 Something about the author's writing style bugs me though, the sentence fragments irk my inner English teacher。 And the ending is tied up a little too neatly。 But I I enjoyed this second novel about Frankie, self-appointed finder of lost people。 I liked the setting of the Wyoming wilderness, the mystery of what happened to Tim (which I did not figure out at all), and while Frankie's alcoholism took less of center stage in this one, we learn more about her childhood and the roots of her drinking。 Something about the author's writing style bugs me though, the sentence fragments irk my inner English teacher。 And the ending is tied up a little too neatly。 But I will definitely need another book about Frankie。 。。。more

I was a huge (HUGE) fan of Before She Disappeared which introduced Frankie Elkin。 This is not that book, which was much more layered and complex。 That's not a negative and it might actually be a positive because this will work fine as a standalone and hopefully send new readers back to the first。 Frankie, who uses her observational and logic skills to find missing people, has attached herself to the search for what are likely the remains of Tim, who disappeared five years ago while on a camping I was a huge (HUGE) fan of Before She Disappeared which introduced Frankie Elkin。 This is not that book, which was much more layered and complex。 That's not a negative and it might actually be a positive because this will work fine as a standalone and hopefully send new readers back to the first。 Frankie, who uses her observational and logic skills to find missing people, has attached herself to the search for what are likely the remains of Tim, who disappeared five years ago while on a camping trip with four of his buddies。 She's not a camper not a hiker, not from the area but she manages to convince Tim's father Martin and Nemeth the guide that she can hold her own。 Also on the trip are Louisa and her search dog Daisy and Bob the Bigfoot hunter。 Bad things happen in the woods。 Very bad。 What does the group find? Will all of them make it? No spoilers from me but keep alert。 It's well paced and twisty enough to keep you guessing。 Thanks to the publisher for the ARC。 While it wasn't what I expected, I very much enjoyed it。 I'm looking forward to more searches with Frankie。 。。。more

This is one of the easiest 5 stars ever。 It's my first Lisa Gardner book and by Chapter 5 I knew I wanted to read the rest of them。 One Step Too Far has had me on the edge of my seat, it has distracted me from work, it has kept me up well past my bedtime。 I have laughed, I have cried。 This is one of the easiest 5 stars ever。 It's my first Lisa Gardner book and by Chapter 5 I knew I wanted to read the rest of them。 One Step Too Far has had me on the edge of my seat, it has distracted me from work, it has kept me up well past my bedtime。 I have laughed, I have cried。 。。。more
